The Etsy SEO Guide

How Etsy search actually works, the seven factors that decide where your listing ranks, and the title, tag and listing practices that move it up — the ShopFoundry Etsy SEO Framework, grounded in Etsy’s own Seller Handbook.

What is Etsy SEO

Etsy SEO is the practice of optimizing your listings so Etsy’s search surfaces them to the right shoppers. Etsy first matches a listing to a query using its tags, title, categories and attributes, then ranks the matches by relevancy, listing quality, recency, shop experience, shipping and per-shopper personalization. Good Etsy SEO means being matchable for the right searches and giving Etsy the engagement signals that lift you within them.

How Etsy search works

Two phases: match, then rank

Etsy search runs in two stages. In the query-matching phase, Etsy pulls every listing whose tags, title, categories and attributes match the words a shopper typed. In the rankingphase, it orders those matches using engagement and shop-quality signals. A listing has to clear the first phase to even be considered in the second — which is why keywords come first and conversion keeps you there.

The framework

The 7 Etsy ranking factors

Etsy keeps the exact algorithm secret, but it has confirmed the signals that drive search rank. These are the seven that matter — the spine of the ShopFoundry Etsy SEO Framework. One gets you matched to a search; the other six decide where you rank.

MATCH 1 · Relevancy tags · title category · attributes RANK 2 · Quality click → buy 3 · Recency new boost 4 · Experience reviews · shop 5 · Shipping free = boost 6 · Language your locale 7 · Shopper habits (CSR) personalized per buyer
1

Relevancy

How closely your tags, title, categories, attributes and product details match the shopper's exact search query. This is the matching layer — no keyword match, no appearance in results.

2

Listing Quality Score

An undisclosed score based on how shoppers interact with a listing after clicking — views, favorites and, above all, purchases. Strong click-to-purchase behavior lifts rank; quick bounce-backs hurt it.

3

Recency

New and renewed listings get a small, temporary boost so Etsy can gather interaction data and form a quality score. The boost fades once Etsy has learned how shoppers respond.

4

Customer & Market Experience Score

Shop-level trust: reviews, completed Shop Policies and a filled-out About section help; one-star reviews, open cases and IP claims hurt your ranking.

5

Shipping Price

Etsy gives listings with free shipping (or low shipping) an extra boost in some markets, notably the US. Inflated shipping to fake 'free' turns buyers away — don't game it.

6

Language & Translations

Write tags and titles in the language you set up your shop in. Manual translations override Etsy's machine translation and tend to perform better for international shoppers.

7

Shopper Habits (CSR)

Etsy personalizes results per shopper — its Context Specific Ranking. Two people searching the same term can see different listings based on their history, so there is no single fixed rank.

Tags

Etsy tag best practices

  • Fill all 13 tag slots — every empty slot is a search you can't appear in.
  • Each tag can be up to 20 characters; use multi-word phrases, not single words.
  • Favor long-tail phrases ('personalized dog mom mug') over broad heads ('mug').
  • Add regional synonyms (grey trainers / gray sneakers) to catch both audiences.
  • Don't repeat the same root word across tags — spread across style, use, recipient, occasion.
  • Refresh tags periodically using your Shop Stats as demand and seasons shift.

Titles

Etsy title best practices

  • Front-load the most important keyword — the first words carry the most weight.
  • Write a readable phrase, not a comma-stuffed keyword dump; it should sound human.
  • Your title doesn't need to do all the work — move extra detail into tags, attributes and description.
  • Cover one clear buyer intent per listing (style + product + who it's for).
  • Avoid trademarked terms (brands, characters, IP) — they risk takedowns, not rank.

Examples

Good vs bad: titles and tags

The same product, optimized two ways. These are illustrative examples that apply the rules above — not data from a specific shop.

✗ Bad title

Custom Mug Gift Coffee Cup Mug Mug Mug Personalized Mug

Repeats “mug” instead of adding new searchable terms; no buyer, no intent.

✓ Good title

Personalized Dog Mom Mug, Custom Pet Coffee Cup, Dog Lover Gift

Key term first, names the buyer (dog mom) and the occasion (gift), reads like a phrase.

✗ Bad tags
muggiftdogcupmug

Single words and a duplicate (“mug”); wastes slots, matches almost nothing specific.

✓ Good tags
personalized dog mugcustom pet mugdog mom giftcoffee cup giftdog lover present

Multi-word long-tail phrases, varied roots, each targeting a distinct real search.

Pitfalls

Common Etsy SEO mistakes

Keyword stuffing

Cramming the same keyword into the title, every tag and the description doesn't multiply relevancy — it wastes slots you could use for new searches.

Duplicate / single-word tags

Repeating one root word or using one-word tags leaves most of your 13-slot reach on the table. Spread across distinct phrases.

Weak thumbnail

A misleading or low-quality first photo gets clicks but quick bounce-backs, which drag down your Listing Quality Score.

Wrong or too-broad category

The wrong category (or skipping attributes) means Etsy can't match you to the right queries, no matter how good your tags are.

Ignoring conversion

Ranking is downstream of selling. A listing that gets clicks but no purchases loses its quality score — price, photos and reviews matter for SEO.

Set-and-forget

Tags and titles that never change fall behind shifting search terms and seasons. Review your Shop Stats and refresh.

FAQ

Etsy SEO, answered

How many tags should I use on Etsy?

All 13. Etsy lets you add up to 13 tags of 20 characters each, and there's no penalty for filling every slot — each empty slot is simply a search you can't appear in. Use multi-word, long-tail phrases and avoid repeating the same root word.

Does Etsy read the listing description for SEO?

Lightly. Etsy's primary matching signals are tags, titles, categories and attributes, but it does take some context from the description. Put your natural keywords in the first lines of the description rather than relying on it as your main SEO lever.

Do repeated keywords help you rank higher?

No. Repeating the same keyword across the title and multiple tags doesn't stack relevancy — it just uses up slots. You rank for more searches by covering more distinct phrases (style, use, recipient, occasion), not by repeating one.

Does free shipping improve Etsy search ranking?

It can. Etsy has said it gives listings with free shipping an extra boost in search in some markets, especially the US. Only offer it if your margin supports it, and never inflate item price with hidden shipping to fake it.

How long does it take a new Etsy listing to rank?

New listings get a short recency boost — sometimes hours, sometimes a few days — while Etsy learns how shoppers interact with them. After that, placement settles based on the listing's quality score, so early clicks and sales matter.

Why do my listings rank differently for different people?

Etsy personalizes results through Context Specific Ranking (CSR). Two shoppers searching the same term can see different listings based on their browsing and purchase history, so there is no single universal rank position for a listing.
