Definition

What are Etsy tags?

Etsy tags are keywords attached to a listing. They describe the item in phrases a buyer might search, such as product type, material, style, recipient or occasion. Tags do not work alone; Etsy also uses other listing fields to understand whether an item is relevant to a search.

How search uses them

How Etsy search uses tags

Title

Names the product clearly and carries the strongest search phrase.

Tags

Add accurate phrases the title cannot comfortably fit.

Category

Helps Etsy understand the type of item.

Attributes

Add structured details such as color, occasion, size or material where available.

ShopFoundry read: the strongest tag sets do not try to force every keyword into the title. They use the title for the clearest product phrase, then use tags, attributes and categories to cover more precise buyer intent.

Best practices

Etsy tag best practices

Use all 13 tag slots

Etsy gives you 13 slots. Filling them gives the listing more ways to match relevant searches, as long as each phrase is accurate.

Use multi-word phrases

A phrase like "silver hoop earrings" is usually more specific than separate single-word tags like "silver" and "earrings".

Spread tags across buyer intent

ShopFoundry recommendation: include product type, material, style, recipient, occasion, room or format instead of repeating the same root keyword.

Let categories and attributes do their job

Etsy says categories and attributes can also support search matching, so tags should add useful phrases those fields do not already express.

Keep every phrase accurate

Do not add unrelated traffic words, brand names, characters or occasions that do not apply to the actual product.

Mistakes

Common Etsy tag mistakes

Repeating the same keyword root

Using "mug", "custom mug", "coffee mug" and "mug gift" may leave too little room for material, recipient, style and occasion intent.

Using only single words

Single words are broad and less descriptive. Etsy's own guidance points sellers toward accurate phrases buyers might type.

Ignoring categories and attributes

If the category or attributes already express a basic fact, use tags for more specific phrases instead of repeating the same field.

Copying a template without checking the product

A template is a starting point. Remove any tag that does not match the material, style, format, recipient or occasion of the listing.

FAQ

Etsy tags, answered

How many tags should I use on Etsy?

Use all 13 tag slots when you can fill them with accurate, distinct phrases. Etsy gives each listing up to 13 tags, so empty slots reduce the number of search phrases your listing can cover.

What is the Etsy tag character limit?

Each Etsy tag can be up to 20 characters, including spaces. If a phrase is longer, shorten it without making the tag vague or misleading.

Do Etsy tags affect ranking?

Tags affect whether a listing can match relevant searches because Etsy uses listing information such as titles, tags, categories, attributes and descriptions to understand relevance. Ranking still also depends on other factors, so tags are not a guarantee of traffic or sales.

Should Etsy tags match my title?

They should support the same buyer intent, but they do not need to repeat the title word for word. Etsy's title guidance says titles do not have to carry every keyword because other listing fields can support matching.

Can Etsy tags repeat keywords?

A little overlap is normal, but repeating the same root across many tags wastes space. Use most slots for distinct phrases that add product, style, material, occasion or buyer intent.

Where can I see Etsy tag examples?

Use the Etsy Tag Examples page for ready-to-use 13-tag templates by product type, then edit any tag that does not fit your exact listing.
