A good Etsy tag is a multi-word phrase a real buyer would type, 20 characters or fewer, that adds a search you don’t already cover. The best 13-tag sets mix the core product, the buyer (recipient/occasion), the format and the style — never 13 variations of one word. The templates below are built exactly that way; copy one and adapt it to your listing.

How tags work with your title, category & attributes
Etsy matches a search against your title, tags, categories and attributes together. Tags are where the keywords the other fields can’t hold go.
Tags vs Title
Both are matched in search, but tags hold the keywords your title can't fit. Don't waste tags duplicating the exact title phrase — extend it.
Tags vs Category
Your category already acts like a tag, so you don't need a tag that just repeats it. Use the slot for a more specific phrase instead.
Tags vs Attributes
Attributes (color, size, occasion) are also searchable. Set them all, then use tags for phrases attributes can't express.

The ShopFoundry 13-Tag Formula
Every template below follows the same structure. ShopFoundry recommends spreading your 13 tags across core product, style/material, buyer, occasion and format intent— so each tag wins a different search instead of repeating the last.
3 core + 3 style/material + 3 buyer + 2 occasion + 2 format = 13 distinct searches, no wasted slots. It’s the difference between a listing that matches one query and one that matches the whole way a buyer might phrase what they want.
Before & after: weak tags vs structured tags
Single words that compete with everything and describe nothing specific.
Same product, but each phrase targets a real buyer search: core, style, buyer, occasion, material.
The 13-Tag Formula is ShopFoundry’s recommended structure, built on Etsy’s documented tag rules and common buyer-intent patterns — a guideline, not an Etsy-published rule. Before/after tags are illustrative.

Common Etsy tag mistakes
Repeating keywords
Reusing the same root word across tags (mug, mug gift, custom mug) stacks no extra relevancy — it just burns slots.
Single-word tags
One-word tags (“mug”, “gift”) compete with everything and match almost nothing specific. Use multi-word phrases.
Keyword stuffing
Cramming a tag into the title, every tag and the description doesn't multiply ranking — variety does.
Ignoring buyer intent
Tags that describe the object but not the buyer (recipient, occasion, style) miss the long-tail searches that actually convert.
Leaving slots empty
Every unused slot of the 13 is a search you can't appear in. Fill all 13.
Going over 20 characters
Etsy caps each tag at 20 characters including spaces; longer phrases get cut or rejected. Keep each tight.
Etsy tags, answered
How many tags can I use on an Etsy listing?
Up to 13. Etsy gives every listing 13 tag slots, and there's no penalty for filling all of them — each empty slot is simply a search you can't appear in.
What is the Etsy tag character limit?
20 characters per tag, including spaces. A multi-word phrase like “dainty gold necklace” (20 characters) is fine; anything longer needs trimming. One descriptive phrase per tag beats two single words.
Should Etsy tags match the keywords in my title?
They should overlap, not duplicate. Etsy looks at title and tags together, so your strongest keyword can appear in both — but spend most tags extending into phrases your title doesn't have room for, rather than repeating it word-for-word.
Do Etsy tags affect ranking?
Yes. Tags are one of the core fields Etsy matches against a shopper's query in its relevancy phase, alongside the title, categories and attributes. A listing has to match the search to appear at all, and tags are a primary way it does.
Can Etsy tags repeat keywords from the title?
They can, but repeating the exact same phrase across many tags wastes slots. Use a couple of tags to reinforce the main keyword, then use the rest for distinct long-tail and buyer-intent phrases.
Should I use all 13 Etsy tags?
Yes — always fill all 13. Each tag is multi-word, under 20 characters, and targets a different angle (core term, buyer, occasion, format, style). The templates on this page show 13-tag sets built exactly that way.
