The catch Shopify’s low % hides

Shopify’s per-sale rate is far lower, but you also pay $39/month ($29 annually) whether you sell or not. Etsy charges no monthly fee. So at low volume Etsy is cheaper overall; Shopify only pulls ahead once you sell enough to cover the subscription.

One caveat that keeps this legitimate: you can’t scrape buyer emails off Etsy orders. Etsy restricts that data to Etsy-related use, and since February 2024 it stopped sharing customer emails with outside email tools. Capture emails the allowed way — a package insert or opt-in offer — then market on Shopify with consent.

Etsy vs Shopify, answered

Can I sell on Etsy and Shopify at the same time?

Yes, and many sellers do. Etsy and Shopify aren't mutually exclusive — you can list the same products in both. The common pattern is to use Etsy for discovery (it brings buyers) and Shopify for ownership (you keep the customer relationship). Tools like Etsy's API and third-party sync apps can keep inventory aligned across both.

Should I leave Etsy for Shopify?

Usually not — at least not at first. Etsy's biggest advantage is built-in demand: 86.6 million active buyers as of Q3 2025. Shopify sends you zero traffic, so leaving Etsy means giving up your discovery engine before you have one of your own. Most sellers add Shopify alongside Etsy rather than replacing it.

Which platform has better SEO?

At low volume, Etsy's pay-per-sale model (no monthly fee) usually costs less in total, even though its per-sale percentage is higher. Shopify tends to pay off once you have steady volume and repeat customers.

Are Etsy fees really higher than Shopify fees?

Per sale, yes. On a $100 order, Etsy's mandatory fees total about $9.95 (~10%) versus about $3.20 (~3.2%) in Shopify Payments card fees. But Shopify adds a $39/month subscription that you pay regardless of sales, while Etsy has none. So Etsy is cheaper at low volume and Shopify's lower rate wins once you sell enough to offset the monthly cost.

Does Etsy give me my customers' email addresses?

Only in a limited way. You receive a buyer's email for an order, but Etsy's policy restricts it to Etsy-related communication — you can't add it to a marketing list without explicit consent, and since February 2024 Etsy stopped sharing customer emails with third-party email tools. On Shopify, the customer relationship and email list are yours.

Can Shopify replace Etsy's traffic?

Not automatically. A Shopify store starts with no visitors; you generate traffic through ads, SEO, email and social. Replacing Etsy's built-in search demand can take months of marketing investment. That's why the safest path is to keep Etsy for discovery while you slowly build your own traffic on Shopify.

What does Shopify actually cost per month in 2026?

Shopify's entry Basic plan is $39/month, or $29/month when billed annually. Higher tiers (Shopify and Advanced) cost more but lower your card rates. On top of the plan you pay payment processing (2.9% + 30¢ online with Shopify Payments) and any paid apps or themes you add.

How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller using Etsy Payments, each sale carries a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping, and a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee. Optional Offsite Ads add 12–15% only on sales they generate, and shops over $10,000/year are auto-enrolled in Offsite Ads and can't opt out.

Is Etsy or Shopify better for beginners?

A beginner on Shopify has to solve the much harder problem of getting anyone to visit at all. Start on Etsy to validate products, then add Shopify once you have demand and repeat customers.

Do I keep my brand on Etsy?

Partly. Your shop has a name and an About section, but it lives inside Etsy's design, URL structure and rules, and Etsy controls the buyer relationship. Shopify gives you your own domain, full design control and ownership of checkout and customer data — which is why brand-led sellers eventually want a store of their own.
